Common Sanifloor Problems

The Sanifloor works in a demanding environment because every shower cycle carries warm water, soap, shampoo, hair and other residues through the floor waste.

Over time, these materials can collect around the waste assembly, connecting pipework, pump chamber and non-return components.

As deposits increase, water may drain more slowly and the pump may run for longer. Consequently, the system can experience unnecessary strain even when the motor itself remains serviceable.

Blocked or restricted shower wastes are among the most common faults we attend. However, activation problems, damaged connections and poor pump access can also affect performance.

The current Sanifloor+ uses wireless communication between the waste and pump. Older generations may use different controls. Therefore, a correct diagnosis must consider the exact product generation rather than treating every Sanifloor in the same way.

Installation quality also plays an important role. Excessive distance, unsuitable pipe routing, poorly supported pipework or an inaccessible pump position may make operation and future maintenance more difficult.

In addition, the pump must remain within the manufacturer’s installation limits. The complete route should be planned around the approved waste assembly, connecting arrangement and 32 mm discharge.

These symptoms can have several causes. Therefore, we do not assume that a noisy or slow system automatically needs a new pump.

Many Sanifloor faults begin at the shower waste rather than inside the pump.

Hair, soap residue and limescale can gradually restrict the path between the shower floor and the pumping system.

As the restriction becomes worse, the pump may receive water unevenly or run for longer than normal. Consequently, the customer may notice slow drainage before a complete failure occurs.

Another common issue is restricted service access. The pump is often hidden inside a vanity unit, wall void, boxed area or adjoining room.

Although discreet installation is one of the product’s advantages, the pump must still remain accessible for inspection, servicing and replacement.

We also find systems where the exact product generation has not been identified correctly. Current wireless Sanifloor+ components should not be confused with older activation arrangements.

For this reason, we inspect the waste type, pump reference and installation layout before ordering parts or recommending replacement.

In many cases, cleaning the waste, correcting a restriction or replacing a service component restores reliable operation.

Our approach remains the same for every Saniflo system: repair first and replace only when replacement offers better long-term value.

Annual Sanifloor Servicing

Regular servicing helps keep the Sanifloor operating reliably and reduces the risk of water backing up into a wet room or walk-in shower.

Because the system handles soap, shampoo, hair and warm grey water, the maintenance schedule should reflect actual usage and local water conditions.

What We Check During a Service

During a professional service, we identify the exact Sanifloor generation and inspect the accessible pump, waste assembly and connecting pipework.

We check the motor, capacitor, seals, non-return components, electrical connections and accessible internal surfaces.

Where the system uses wireless activation, we also assess the communication and operating response between the dedicated waste and pump.

For older installations, we inspect the relevant activation arrangement fitted to that generation.

Next, we look for hair, soap residue, biofilm, limescale and other deposits that may restrict water flow.

We then test the complete shower drainage cycle and confirm that the pump starts, removes water and stops correctly.

Early inspection can identify worn components or developing restrictions before they cause a complete drainage failure.

Waste Assembly and Pump Performance

The dedicated shower waste forms an essential part of the Sanifloor system. Therefore, servicing the pump alone may not resolve a fault if the waste or connecting route remains restricted.

We inspect both parts together and assess how efficiently water moves from the shower area to the discharge pipe.

Optional Deep Steam Cleaning

For a higher level of preventative maintenance, we offer optional Deep Steam Cleaning for an additional €60.

High-temperature steam helps remove bacteria, biofilm, soap residue, limescale and unpleasant odours without harsh chemicals.

However, the suitability of steam cleaning depends on access and the condition of the installation. We assess this before carrying out the additional treatment.

Sanifloor Repairs

Most Sanifloor faults do not automatically require complete system replacement. Therefore, every repair begins with a professional diagnosis.

First, we determine whether the problem comes from the shower waste, activation system, connecting route, pump, discharge pipework or electrical supply.

Then, we explain the recommended repair and any parts required.

Depending on the product generation and component availability, repairs may include cleaning or servicing the waste assembly, clearing restrictions and replacing suitable pump components.

We may also replace capacitors, non-return components, seals, motors, control parts or other genuine Saniflo service items where appropriate.

Current Sanifloor+ systems use a wireless operating arrangement. Consequently, diagnosis must include the relationship between the compatible waste and pump rather than focusing on the motor alone.

Many customers assume that slow shower drainage means the pump has failed. In reality, hair and soap deposits around the waste can produce similar symptoms.

Likewise, a pump that runs for too long may be responding to restricted water movement rather than suffering from complete motor failure.

After completing a repair, we test the full operating cycle with water.

We confirm that the shower drains correctly, the pump activates at the appropriate time and the system switches off normally.

Finally, we check accessible joints and discharge connections for leaks before returning the installation to service.

Sanifloor Replacement

Repair usually provides the most economical solution when the pump and compatible waste system remain in serviceable condition.

However, replacement may offer better long-term value when the pump has extensive internal wear, major water damage, repeated faults or unavailable components.

Replacement may also become necessary when an older Sanifloor generation cannot be repaired economically or when the bathroom is being redesigned.

The current SFA product is called Sanifloor+ and is available in four versions. Therefore, we must match the replacement kit to the floor construction and shower design.

Sanifloor+ 1 is for tiled floors with a waterproofing membrane. Sanifloor+ 2 is for vinyl floors, Sanifloor+ 3 is for shower trays and Sanifloor+ 4 is for compatible Wedi formers.

Before recommending a replacement, we inspect the existing waste, floor finish, pump position, access, connecting route, discharge pipework and electrical supply.

Replacing the pump alone may not be appropriate if the existing waste is incompatible with the current generation.

For this reason, some installations require coordinated work with a bathroom installer, tiler or flooring specialist.

Where practical, we explain these requirements before work begins so that the bathroom finish is protected and unnecessary alterations are avoided.

Additional work may be required where access is restricted or the existing floor waste and current replacement system are not directly compatible.

Our Professional Recommendation

The current SFA specification uses a 32 mm external discharge connection for Sanifloor+.

Therefore, for new installations we recommend maintaining correctly installed 32 mm discharge pipework throughout the route wherever practical.

Older Sanifloor information may refer to other pipe sizes. However, the current product specification should guide a new Sanifloor+ installation.

Choose the Correct Waste Version

The waste assembly is not a generic shower fitting. It forms an operating part of the Sanifloor+ system.

For this reason, the correct version must be selected for the actual floor construction: tiled membrane, vinyl, shower tray or compatible Wedi former.

Changing the floor finish later may require a different waste arrangement and should be considered during bathroom planning.

Keep the Pump Accessible

The remote pump can be positioned discreetly, but it must remain accessible for servicing, testing and replacement.

We do not recommend sealing the pump permanently behind tiles, fixed furniture or a wall without a suitable access panel.

Good access reduces labour time and helps avoid unnecessary disturbance to the finished bathroom.

Plan the Complete Route

The connection between the waste and pump should follow the manufacturer’s instructions and remain within the stated distance and height limits.

The 32 mm discharge route should be supported correctly and kept as direct as practical.

Unnecessary bends, poor support and inaccessible joints can increase resistance or make future maintenance more difficult.

These recommendations reflect our practical experience with Saniflo shower drainage systems since 2015.

Typical Lifespan of a Sanifloor

A professionally installed and regularly maintained Sanifloor can provide many years of dependable service.

However, there is no single lifespan that applies to every installation, and we do not use a fixed 10-to-20-year claim.

Actual service life depends on shower usage, water hardness, installation quality, pump access, waste cleanliness and the amount of hair and soap entering the system.

The waste assembly and pump work together. Therefore, the condition of one component can affect the performance of the other.

Hair, soap residue, biofilm and limescale may gradually restrict water movement even when the motor remains mechanically sound.

Likewise, a worn capacitor, non-return component, seal or activation part does not automatically mean that the complete system requires replacement.

Where parts remain available and the installation is in good condition, individual service components can often be repaired or replaced.

Older Sanifloor generations may have different parts availability from the current wireless Sanifloor+ range.

Consequently, we identify the exact pump and waste system before assessing repair value.

Regular inspection, prompt attention to slow drainage and good access provide the strongest foundation for long-term reliability.

How to Extend the Life of Your Sanifloor

Long-term reliability depends on keeping the shower waste clean, using the system correctly and arranging maintenance when performance changes.

Clean the Shower Waste Regularly

Remove accessible hair and soap deposits before they build up inside the waste assembly.

Regular cleaning helps water reach the pump efficiently and may reduce unnecessary operating time.

Use cleaning products that are suitable for the shower surface and Saniflo installation. Avoid aggressive chemicals unless their compatibility has been confirmed.

Respond to Early Warning Signs

Slow drainage, delayed activation, repeated cycling, unusual noise and water remaining around the waste may indicate a developing restriction or component fault.

Therefore, arrange an inspection before the shower stops draining completely.

Continuing to use a system that is backing up can increase the risk of water spreading across the wet-room floor.

Protect the System from Unsuitable Materials

To help protect the Sanifloor, avoid allowing the following materials to enter the shower waste:

• Cleaning cloths
• Wet wipes
• Paper towels
• Large clumps of hair
• Plastic packaging
• Building materials
• Tile adhesive or grout
• Paint residue
• Plaster or cement washings
• Any unsuitable non-biodegradable material

Preserve Service Access

Do not use the pump access space for permanent storage that prevents inspection.

In addition, keep removable panels and access doors easy to open.

Clear access allows faults to be diagnosed more efficiently and can reduce labour costs during servicing or repairs.
